Face-to-Face Meetings in Charleston

We meet every Friday at 7:00 p.m. at the Unitarian Universalist Church, which is located at 4 Archdale Street in Charleston. If you need help finding the meeting location, view this map or contact us for detailed directions.

LifeRing meetings are open to anyone who is trying to become or remain abstinent from alcohol and other drugs. We also welcome spouses and significant others who wish to support their loved ones in recovery.

The local meeting follows a standard LifeRing format: “How Was Your Week?” We take turns talking about what’s been going on in our recoveries since the last meeting, and we look ahead to any challenges or potential pitfalls that await us in the coming week. Cross-talk is encouraged; others’ questions and comments often provide valuable food for thought and feedback that enrich not only the experience of the meeting, but also the process of daily living that goes on in between the meetings.

Meetings do not include extended “war stories” or “drunkalogues” about the drinking and using we did in the past, attack therapy or confrontation, discussions of religion or politics, or complaints about other recovery approaches. We like to keep things civil and positive.

Naturally, whatever is said in the meeting stays in the meeting.

There is no charge to attend meetings. As in other recovery programs, we “pass the basket,” but—as in other recovery programs—contributions are entirely voluntary.

In areas where LifeRing has a strong presence, groups have been experimenting with study meetings based on the Recovery by Choice workbook. If there is interest or demand for such a study group, we will add it in the future.

Online Meetings and Other Resources

If you can’t make a meeting in person, LifeRing’s website is packed with helpful stuff: chat rooms (where there are online meetings every day), email lists, a bulletin board, recovery-related articles and blogs, links to other recovery resources, even recipes for alcohol-free cooking. There is also a Ning network for LifeRing folk.
